ProForm Vue Fitness Mirror, $1,499, available at ProForm Fitness efforts could lead to worse health if gym goers don’t follow all pandemic protocols, wearing face coverings chief among them, according to a report released today by the State Department of Health.A 2020 COVID-19 cluster traced to three fitness centers was highlighted in a scientific paper that was published today in the CDC’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report. The investigation was performed by a team led by Dr. Sarah Kemble, acting state epidemiologist, who served as the principal investigator and lead researcher for a paper titled, Community Transmission of SARS-CoV-2 at Three Fitness Facilities — Hawai‘i, June–July 2020. The paper chronicles how an asymptomatic fitness instructor initially transmitted the virus to participants in a high-intensity stationary cycle class in late June 2020. Another instructor who attended one of the classes, in turn, unknowingly transmitted the virus to participants during personal training sessions and kick-boxing lessons at another fitness center before the onset of symptoms. The second instructor tested positive and was later hospitalized and required intensive care. A third gym, where the first instructor taught a class more than two days prior to symptom onset, was also investigated, but no transmission was observed.

Altogether, more than 30 participants tested positive for COVID-19. However, the report notes the number may have been much higher as the number of participants infected with virus who were asymptomatic may not have been tested or participants might have underreported symptoms or refused testing.At the time of the outbreak, face masks were not required in fitness centers. However, as a result of work done by the Department of Health, Honolulu City and County amended emergency orders on July 22, 2020, to require that all persons wear face coverings (i.E., non-medical masks) in fitness facilities, including during exercise. Wearing a well-fitting mask is important whenever around people who do not live with you.

As part of the collaboration, Raisman, 26, has compiled all of her favorite exercises for a video posted on Silk’s YouTube channel to show some at-home moves that’ll make anyone feel like they’re training to be an Olympian. “Some of the exercises that I did are things that I incorporated in my gymnastics training that was really, I think, crucial to my success in the sport,” she said of the workout video. “I think it’s awesome that Silk Ultra is allowing this to be super relatable…We didn’t give a certain amount of reps because I know it’s not one size fits all and I think it’s important to meet yourself where you’re at every single day and do whatever feels good for you in that moment.”

And to entice fans to join in, Silk and Raisman are looking to give fellow fitness enthusiasts a home gym makeover with their “Silk ULTRA Upgrade” sweepstakes. To enter, all participants have to do is snap a sweaty selfie after completing the workout and upload it to the sweepstakes’ website, along with a brief summary of how they strive to maintain a plant-based lifestyle. Those looking to participate have until March 7. And even though it’s no surprise she can perfectly execute every move, Raisman admitted she’s not a stranger to the struggles of trying to mimic your gym routine in smaller quarters.=“I have a puppy [and] sometimes when I try to work out in my living room he thinks that my scrunchie in my hair is like a chew toy,” she told T+L.
